Introduction to 2. CMC
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, referred to as CMC, is a kind of anionic polymer with ether bond structure, which is made of cellulose as the main raw material, after alkalization and ultra fine treatment, and then made by multiple chemical reactions such as crosslinking, etherification and acidification. Non-toxic, tasteless, odorless, with good water retention.

Chemical name: sodium carboxymethyl cellulose
Physical and chemical properties: Easily soluble in water, insoluble in organic solvents, with good chemical stability.
Appearance: White or light yellow powder or granules
Characteristics and role of paper-grade CMC--
This product has high ether low viscosity characteristics, can be used as paper smoothing agent, sizing agent, water retention agent.
The main role in surface sizing:
1. Has good rheological and film-forming properties;
2. Reduce the paper surface pores and improve the oil resistance of the paper;
3. Increase the brightness and gloss of the paper;
4. Increase the stiffness, smoothness,
5. Improve the surface strength and abrasion resistance of the paper, reduce the lint and powder, and improve the printing quality.
The main role in pigment coating
1. Control and adjust the rheology of the coating and the dispersion of the pigment, and improve the solid content of the coating;
2. Make the coating have pseudoplasticity and improve the coating speed;
3. Enhance the water retention of the coating and prevent the migration of the water-soluble adhesive;
4. Has a good film-forming, improve coating gloss;
5. Improve the retention rate of brighteners in coatings and improve the whiteness of paper;
The main role in the addition of pulp
1. Improve refining efficiency, promote fiber refinement and shorten beating time;
2. Adjust the internal potential of the pulp, evenly disperse the fibers, improve the "papermaking performance" of the paper machine, and further improve the paper sheet forming;
3. Improve the retention rate of various additives, fillers and fine fibers;
4. Increase the binding force between fibers and improve the physical properties of paper;
5. Combined with dry and wet strength agent, it can improve the dry and wet strength of the paper;
6. Protect the internal sizing agent such as rosin and AKD to enhance the sizing effect.

CMC is used as a water retaining agent in coatings, which directly reduces the cost of use. Due to the application of CMC, the solid content of the coating can be increased, the water content of the wet coating can be reduced, the drying load can be reduced, the vehicle speed can be effectively increased, the production efficiency can be improved, and the production cost can be reduced.
Introduction to 3. CMS
Sodium carboxymethyl starch, also known as carboxymethyl starch, referred to as CMS, is an anionic starch ether, chemical formula [C10H19O8Na]n, white or yellowish powder, is soluble in cold water electrolyte. It is a kind of modified starch, belongs to ether starch, is a kind of water-soluble anionic polymer compounds. It is tasteless, non-toxic, not easy to mildew, when the degree of substitution is greater than 0.2 when soluble in water.

Chemical name: Sodium carboxymethyl starch
Physical and chemical properties: soluble in water to form a colloidal solution, light, heat stability. Insoluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform and other organic solvents.
Appearance: white, yellowish powder or paper grade
CMS Features and Role--
Sodium carboxymethyl starch (CMS) is a modified starch etherified with carboxymethyl group, and its performance is better than that of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).
CMS is widely used in papermaking: adding as a stabilizer to the filler, it plays a thickening and bonding role, makes the paper gloss bright, improves the printing performance of the paper, and enhances the toughness and wear resistance of the paper; it is used as an additive in the pulp to improve the retention and filtration effect; it is also used for the surface sizing of the paper, which can significantly improve the dry strength and wet strength, oil resistance, ink absorption and water resistance of the paper; use in coating bonding can improve the production and use properties of paper.
Dosage description:
The dosage of CMC and CMS is generally controlled at 0.5-1.5 (calculated by the absolute dry amount of coated paper pigment). If it is used for special paper, special models can be selected according to the speed of the paper machine and the paper type requirements, and special models can be developed for customers to meet customer production needs.
Regarding the adjustment of dosage and formula, the production technology research and development department of each application manufacturer makes reasonable adjustments and balances various factors according to the specific conditions of the factory model, base paper, coated paper and special paper product positioning and original formula design, so as to meet their own process requirements.
